Selection criteria for gratings

feature

Welded press grating (SP)

Press grate (P)

Insert grate (EP)

Basic principle

Load-bearing bars and crossbars are welded together at each node.

Crossbars are pressed into the load-bearing bars (without welding).

The load-bearing and crossbars are slotted and inserted into each other (positive locking).

Essential planning and selection criteria for gratings

When selecting the appropriate grating, in addition to the grating type , the load-bearing capacity, deflection, and fastening must be taken into account. The chosen grating must reliably and permanently meet the specific operating conditions.

The following points should be noted in particular:

  • Types of stress:
    • uniformly distributed surface loads (min. 2.0 kN/m²),
    • stationary or rolling point loads (min. 1.5 kN on 200 × 200 mm),
    • Static and dynamic loads (e.g., from people or vehicles).
  • Load capacity:
    • Selection based on manufacturer's load tables,
    • Consideration of span, material and safety factors,
    • Static calculations may need to be performed by a specialist engineer in special cases.
  • Deflection:
    • The elastic deflection should generally not exceed L/200 .
    • At joints, the height difference to adjacent grates must not exceed 4 mm .
  • Fastening and support:
    • secure and permanent anchoring to the substructure,
    • possibly additional supports or reinforced edge connections,
    • Adjacent grates are connected by butt joints or double clamps.
  • Operating conditions:
    • Slip resistance,
    • Corrosion protection,
    • Temperature resistance
    • Weather conditions and aggressive media.

Essential planning and selection criteria for gratings

  1. Clarify the load – consider area loads, point loads and static/dynamic loads.
  2. Select load-bearing capacity – based on manufacturer's tables (material, span, safety factors).
  3. Limit deflection – id R. max. L/200 , impact height difference ≤ 4 mm .
  4. Secure fastening – permanent anchoring to the substructure, possibly with additional supports.
  5. Secure rust connections – use butt joints or double clamps.
  6. Consider operating conditions – slip resistance, corrosion, temperature, weather/media.
